Austin is the Coolest City

by Ellen in Around Austin / 08.25.08

Lately, I have been feeling some good Austin vibes. For starters, I love Austin because where else would you see a guy with the beginnings of a billy goat beard, wearing a Texas Longhorns shirt, and knitting while he waits for the bus? What is he knitting by the way?

I had my camera with me on this day because I was on the way to see Lyle Lovett and his big band. What a cool show! There is no better place to see Lyle perform than Austin. It just feels right, and his lyrics are spot-on as he talks about Texas during and in between his songs.

Austin, hands down, has the best and most diverse live music scene. If I would have had the energy, and had not been starving for a P.Terry’s veggie burger, I could have walked right out of the Lyle Lovett show and into no less than 50 different live music venues, within walking distance on a Tuesday night!

I wonder why more people don’t move to Austin, especially since it is consistently named as one of the top cities to live in, in the U.S.? I think it might be because it can be so darn hot here. The good news is that Austin has lots of water to cool off. You do not have to go that far - Lady Bird lake, lake Austin and lake Travis all run through the middle of town. I like lake Travis the most, because the water is so clear that you can see your feet when treading water.

After a day out on the lake, I love to hit some of Austin’s local spots for some yummy food and cold beverages. Anywhere in Austin, you can roll in with your bathing suit, flip flops and crazy hair and you will be met with open arms. Last weekend, after a day on out on the lake, I noticed that our waitress had her bathing suit on under her clothes. Right on. I like how she rolls right off the lake and into work. If you want to get to know some of these great spots check out this free video called “How to be a Local in Austin, Tx“. The vibe in Austin is really unique and you really just have to be here to feel it.
