Build a Custom Computer? It is not as difficult as it sounds

by Dustin in Author Highlight, General / 07.15.09

People use their computers for a myriad of purposes and activities. Take the MindBites office, for example: we have intense computer programmers, creative video editors, crafty graphic designers, hardcore online gamers, wanna-be music producers, and obsessive facebook users/tweeters (or is it twitterers?…or tweeps?). This may explain why it is becoming increasingly popular for people to build their own computers instead of purchasing the one-size-fits-all versions you find at retail stores or online.

There are many benefits to building your own custom PC. In most cases it is more cost-efficient, but more importantly, it guarantees you will get exactly what you want out of your computer. When you build your own computer, you get to choose the exact components to install in your machine. Sound daunting? Yeah, but honestly, it is totally okay if you do not know a motherboard from a PCI card because it is actually not that difficult to build your own computer…as long as you have a good teacher.

I prefer a custom-built system. A lot of pre-built systems lack certain hardware (bottlenecks) or invest too much in unnecessary equipment (1 TB Hard drive with onboard graphics for a “gaming PC”).
To help me choose the equipment I like using online configurators. Some of them even check the compatibility of your chosen products.

Do you have any specific configurator sites that you like more than others? I also prefer custom built, not necessarily by me but there are a lot of custom PC makers out there that have great prices that will get you far more for your dollar than a Dell or HP.
