As we were eating enchiladas, fajitas, rice, beans, guac, watching the game, and getting ready for a serious poker game, my husband made an announcement that he was stuffed to the gills but going back for seconds anyway. He came back to the table with a huge plate, stacked full, and proceeded to take down the second plate with reckless abandon.
Afterwards, he was so uncomfortable and was asking why we let him go back for seconds. I think that this is more typical than not. The food tastes so good that we tend to eat more than our fair share. I am wondering how we get back to the way it used to be, where we eat to live rather than live to eat.
As all this was going on, I was browsing through a book that was a summary of the various diets out there. The book was similar to the book Diets in a Nutshell. It seemed like the secret to diets is to eat things that will make you feel full so you don’t overeat. Read the rest of this entry »

Ugh, cedar. I hate it. I realized this only after moving to Austin in 2001. You could say that Austin gave me allergies (Cedar Levels in Austin, TX.) I thought maybe I should move back to Houston. But then I would have to leave my job, my cool apartment, and all the friends…they are definitely worth the chronic allergies, right? However much Austin is worth, allergy season still makes working in a carport office extremely uncomfortable.

I work at MindBites headquarters; a one-room, one-bath side-house that overlooks a grassy knoll, a few bushes, and the house dog’s bathroom.

We are slightly cramped for space so when you’re sick, everyone’s sick (or would be sick, if your boss hadn’t found out that the shower could be turned into additional office space). Last week when cedar levels hit record breaking highs, I thought about willingly taking my laptop into the shower.

However, I was not sure if I had allergies or a cold, so I was taking both Benadryl at night and DayQuil in the morning. Nothing I took seemed to work, and my nose felt like it was going to be congested for eons.

Luckily, our video production team shot a lesson on how to take care of these things. Watch the free preview here:
Cold and Flu Protocols

In this video, pharmaceutical specialist, Kaya Dupuis, introduces the Neil Med Sinus Rinse Kit. It turns out that you have to physically remove the pollen that gets lodged in your nose to cure your sinuses of cedar allergies. If I had done this earlier, my co-workers would probably have appreciated me more in the office and been less inclined to show me the shower.

David Fowler of UCHobby, who recently published his first MindBite, Using a Digital Multimeter, gave the readers of his blog a peek at the cool mini-production set he made in his workshop. You can read his full post at his UCHobby blog, but the basic gist is that he attached an inexpensive digital camcorder to the swing arm he removed from a desk lamp to create a neat mount he can easily rotate around his worktable.

Very cool stuff David! And it just goes to show how a little ingenuity can solve almost any video production challenge. Check out David’s first masterpiece below. We can’t wait to see what else comes out of this cool new stage.

Welcome to the MindBites Blog! Took us a few weeks to get this sucker up (had to design that little orange thing in the header). But we’re here now and ready to go. This is where we will share thoughts, writings, and random noodlings from the MindBites team. What is MindBites? Why MindBites is (read with your best James Earl Jones voice) the leading social marketplace and publishing platform for instructional media on the Interweb (duh duh DUHHH).

But seriously, we’re pretty excited about what we’re doing. You see, MindBites is a place where anyone can design, create, and sell video instructional lessons and earn money for themselves or charity. We believe that the best things you learn in life are from other real people, and the most interesting people we know are unbelievably passionate about their interests. Our goal is to create a place where everyone can share their unique knowledge and passions. Like Laura Berg, our favorite Canadian baby sign language instructor:
“So wait,” you say, “they earn money? Does that mean, I have to (gasp) pay for something on the web? Are you crazy?” Well nobody is forcing you, but we think it’s worth it. Read the rest of this entry »
